Sometimes when I go wandering I like to check out the goods
In a funky little quaint little second hand store in my neighbourhood
In between percolator that won't perk and a whole pile of TVs where half don't work
I'm sure to pick up something that I like.
Well that day the wind was howling' out, I had to slip inside
An ain't no telling' what kind of thing was there for me to find
An encyclopedia from 1949 or some black light paintings that would blow your mind
But I had no idea what this place had in store.
Oh no
I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store
A new love was mine when she walked through the door
This old heart about fell on the floor
When I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store.
Now we're together and I want you to know people she's something delectable
No more wasting our precious time looking for something collectible
'Cause in the midst of all that antiquity
She must've been looking for the same thing as me
I fell in love for the last time in my life
Good God
I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store
A new love was mine when she walked through the door
This old heart about fell on the floor
When I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store.
I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store
A new love was mine when she walked through the door
This old heart about fell on the floor
When I fell in love at first sight in the second hand store.

I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I used to think it was oh so strange
But now time has found away to re-arrange it so
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did.
The keys are for a pollutin' old Ford
That I really wish I didn't need
I've got one for the trunk and another for the door
To get me up to speed.
The change I need, to call my baby
To know that the little boy's fine
I've got a broken-strapped watch deep down in my pocket
To help me keep track of time.
So now I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I used to think it was oh so strange
But now time has found away to re-arrange it so
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did.
Now my old man was a fine old man
But I didn't want to be the same
I think I've done well to make my own trail
And we still share the name.
But apart from the name and the gospel songs
We both still love to sing
There ain't a whole lot that we hold in common
Except this one little thing.
So now I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did
I used to think it was oh so strange
But now time has found away to re-arrange it so
I rattle when I walk, just like my daddy did.
Just like my daddy did
Just like my daddy did.

Barn spoiled
Can't help what I do, yes I'm
Barn spoiled
Like a barn spoiled nag
Galloping home to you.
Some folks hit the Happy Hour when the working day is through
Have a few laughs and knock back a beer and a shot
But I can't join them when they tell me it's time to have some fun
'Cause you turn me toward home and I break into a trot.
'Cause I'm barn spoiled
Can't help what I do, yes I'm
Barn spoiled
Like a barn spoiled nag
Galloping home to you.
Some folks try to tell me
"Yeah, she's got you on a string"
But they don't know what's waiting at home you see
By the time I hear that buzzer ring and I'm passing by the clock
Home corral's already calling me.
'Cause I'm barn spoiled
Can't help what I do, yes I'm
Barn spoiled
Like a barn spoiled nag
Galloping home to you.
All maybe it's got something to do with the lady I've got waiting
Waiting with a love that's true and I ain't hesitatin'
Or maybe it's the close she wore last time she met me at the door
But I ain't waiting' anymore I'm
Barn spoiled
Can't help what I do, yes I'm
Barn spoiled
Like a barn spoiled nag
Galloping home to you.

Precious little time to spend with precious you
Moments all to fleeting, all too few
We've got our lives to lead and things to do
And not much precious time to spend with precious you.
When we're together are the moments I remember
The spots of sunlight through the shadows 'neath the trees
It's imprinted in my mind and when we're far away
I go back to that time and I'm with you that day.
Precious little time to spend with precious you
Moments all to fleeting, all too few
We've got our lives to lead and things to do
And not much precious time to spend with precious you.
Well it's a pretty little café in the city
Your gospel hair your blue jean eyes, your tender kiss
When I'm alone I can be happy, but it's not the same
As the happiness I feel when I'm with you again.
Precious little time to spend with precious you
Moments all to fleeting, all too few
We've got our lives to lead and things to do
And not much precious time to spend with precious you.
Precious little time to spend with precious you
Moments all to fleeting, all too few
One day things will change, I'll marry you
And I'll spend all my living days just loving you.
Precious little time to spend with you.

You're only a daydream away
And so close to my heart anyway
I can't be with you as much as I'd wish to
But your on my mind to stay
And you're only a daydream away.
You're in my eyes every time that I try
To get done my job and I don't wonder why
I just overheard the boss say
"Just look at him daydream away".
You're only a daydream away
And so close to my heart anyway
I can't be with you as much as I'd wish to
But your on my mind to stay
And you're only a daydream away.
The times we're together I treasure them so
I capture a moment and I won't let it go
I keep it till some lonely day
And then I just daydream away
Daydream away
Daydream away
You're on my mind to stay
And you're only a daydream away.

Takin' good love for granted, that's how I came to fall
Once I hsd a woman
She loved me like a wife
We started us a family
We were set for love for life.
But a fling one night in a local bar,
With a dancer from Montreal
She found out about it
That's how I came to fall.
Used to have a good job
I was really, really on the rise
A kid with big ambitions
You could see it in my eyes
But with worrying about my family
I wasn't always on the ball
My star began descending
That's how I came to fall.
Now I was fine till I let my mind
Wander to rest no more
Now my heart is cold and it feels like my soul
Is out beggin' from door to door.
Sitting here, behind this beer
Thinking about it all
Taking good love for granted
That's how I came to fall.
Well I was on the wagon
But the wagon didn't roll for me
Still I knew the barroom
Was not the place to be.
Weeks went by, and I was dry
'Til one day my little girl called
I let it all get to me
That's how I came to fall.
Well I was fine till I let my mind
Wander to rest no more
Now my heart is cold and it feels like my soul
Is out beggin' from door to door.
Sitting here, behind this beer
Thinking about it all
Taking good love for granted
That's how I came to fall.
Sitting here, with no one near
Talkin' to my alcohol
Taking good love for granted
That's how I came to fall.
Taking good love for granted
That's how I came to fall.

I was sitting at a little red felt-covered table
I was reflecting on my fate
I'd drank about as much as I was able to
I was in a lonely state.
Then she blew in on her angel wings
Pretty as an angel could be
She said "I've got to get off my feet
Would you mind a little company?"
So I pulled back a chair, and signaled the waitress
To bring us round a couple of beer
Then I started in with the small talk
"So what brings you in here"
Well she just smiled, it was a work of art
Right there she had me, she'd stole my heart
The place was filling up with the late night crowd
I said let's go somewhere quiet, it's gettin' too loud.
She said "I'll go with you, but you know my time ain't free
Oh no"
But I liked her so much, I bought the company.
Well I liked her so much, I bought the company
I could have taken her home, and loved here for eternity
But I guess when you go down that road
Once you're walking those streets
You can't turn 'round so easily
But I liked her so much, I bought the company.
Now her goodbye kiss is still warm on my lips
But that's nothing that you couldn't condone
I need some green, gotta' find a bank machine
So I can pay my taxi home.
The streetlights had faded - we'd talked until dawn
She could sure tell I wasn't any regular John
We were interrupted by her ring tone
Someone was calling on her cell phone
She said I'll go with you, and that was the end for me
But liked her so much, and she'd kept me company.
Well I liked her so much, I bought the company
I could have taken her home, and loved here for eternity
But I guess when you go down that road
Once you're walking those streets
You can't turn 'round too easily
But I liked her so much, I bought the company.
I liked her so much.

You call me a loser
Claim I've got no empathy
Too much of a boozer
How did you end up with me?
Well I don't know if what you say is true
But I've got just one thing to say to you.
Already you're harpin'
The minute that I get back home
You can't wait to start in
Complaining to your mother on the telephone.
Well I don't care what they may think of me
Or how you put me down relentlessly.
'Cause I am rubber, you are glue,
Everything you say
Bounces off me
And sticks to you.
(repeat)
You think you can hurt me with your words
And so you try
But I just sit here thinking"Well that's you
But what am I".
I've got no motivation
If people could hear you talk
I'm leading the nation
In goofin' off around the clock
And though it does get to me
Now and then
Well you're just talking 'bout yourself again.
'Cause I am rubber, you are glue,
Everything you say
Bounces off me
And sticks to you.
(repeat)

G'Ling G'Ling!
G'Ling G'Ling!
C'est une belle journée d'été
Et si ta maman veut, elle peut goûter
G'Ling G'Ling!
Do you want something?
G'Ling G'Ling!
Do you want something?
G'Ling G'Ling!
Do you want something?
C'est pas facile quand on n'est pas instruit
Je fais G'Ling G'Ling pour gagner ma vie
G'Ling G'Ling!
G'Ling G'Ling!
Les enfants m'adore presqu'autant que leur père
Ils crient G'Ling G'Ling! G'Ling G'Ling! puis s'en vont chercher leur mère
G'Ling G'Ling!
G'Ling G'Ling!
Do you want something?
Do you want something?

Love ain't fair
Love ain't fair to me
(repeat)
You know you hurt me tremendously
Hurt me relentlessly
When I first set my eyes on you
It felt like I was coming alive
And when I got to know you
Well it almost seemed as though you wanted me to keep you satisfied.
But when I called you up you said
"Can't you call again some other time"
I tried to get through to you
But with everything I'd do it seemed like
I was only wasting my dime.
Love ain't fair
Love ain't fair to me
(repeat)
You know you hurt me tremendously
Hurt me relentlessly
Down at the ballgame you were cheering
Til your eyes met mine
I was trying together to see you
But it always seemed to be you
Got away and left me standing on the foul line.
Love ain't fair
Love ain't fair to me
(repeat)
You know you hurt me tremendously
Hurt me relentlessly

There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
You did what you could
To make it look good
But there ain't much meat on the hook
Well it's down to the fishing' hole
With my friend Hugo
To catch a denizen of the deep
We like 'em fightin'
But today they ain't bitin'
We're figuring they must be asleep
Is it our casting that off or
Are they sizing' up what we have to offer?
Observin' with a critical eye...
There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
The grasshopper's nice
The worms alright
But doesn't rate a second look.
There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
You did what you could
To make it look good
But there ain't much meat on the hook
Skinny Little Annie
With the cute little fanny
She won't stop giving' me the eye
But if I ever weaken
My future will be bleak and
You can kill me 'cause I'd much rather die
From her good side her qualities are many
But when she turns around she doesn't have any
Visible to the critical eye...
There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
She looks like she must've been
Goalie for the dart team
Doesn't rate a second look.
There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
She did what she could
To make it look good
But there ain't much meat on the hook
Now what could go wrong
When you're writin' a song
As catchy as this one here?
I'll be submitting' this tune in a contest soon
Can I share my one biggest fear?
It's if Paula Abdul
Or a similar tasteless fool
Listens with a critical ear...
And says "There ain't much meat on the hook
Ain't much meat on the hook
The title's fine but it's the only good line
And you don't rate a second look.
There ain't much meat on the hook
Just didn't have what it took
You did what you could
To make it sound good
But there ain't much meat on
There ain't much meat on
There ain't much meat on the hook.
Somethin' seems missin'
Ain't worth a second listen
The idea's there but the bones are bare
There ain't much meat on the hook".

DNO (David Nelson Ostrosser) offers up an LP-length CD of radio-friendly Americana with a roots feel and a few pop and crossover surprises as well. Some of the finest roots musicians in the Ottawa Valley populate the tracks on Second Hand Store, but it's the songs that are the real focus: touching slices of Americana, but with DNO's sometimes mischievous sense of humor rarely far from the surface. Listeners have brought up comparisons to John Hiatt and Ray Wylie Hubbard, but also to playful tunesmiths such as Randy Newman.
